We want to get our season up and running: Cleary

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has described Thursday night’s clash with South Sydney as an opportunity to get their season up and running following the Round 1 loss to the Broncos.

Looking for their first win of the season, the Panthers will host the Rabbitohs in front of a blockbuster crowd at BlueBet Stadium.

Rabbitohs representative Latrell Mitchell threw fuel on the fire earlier in the week, claiming the Panthers have “cracks in the windscreen” – but Cleary dismissed the opposition fullback’s comments.

“I don’t think we need any extra motivation,” he said.

“We’re really focused on getting our own game right and going after the game. It’s a great opportunity to get our season up and running.

Final Word: Round 2

“Each season is full of challenges, whether you’re winning or you’re not. Tomorrow is another great opportunity to play against a good opposition in front of our home fans, and the boys are looking forward to it.”

Having faced off in a grand final and a couple of preliminary finals over the past few seasons, the Panthers and Rabbitohs have built a new-age rivalry.

Cleary’s men hold the advantage with nine wins from the past 10 games between the two sides.

We need to keep each other accountable: Edwards

“We’ve had some really good battles with them in some big games,” Cleary said.

“It’s a great opportunity and a blessing to be part of these big games. Souths are a great side … and we’re fortunate to be playing in these games.

We’re keen to put in a good performance and make our community proud.

Cleary also discussed the heated discussion between Jarome Luai and Jaeman Salmon following the loss to the Broncos.

The Panthers coach encourages accountability and courageous discussions, but said there’s a time and place for them.

“We had a chat – got them in the headmaster’s office – the situation was quite humorous… but we can all see how it wasn’t a great look,” Cleary said.

“It was just a bit of frustration but nothing more than that. You want them to compete hard and that’s what they were doing.

“Our focus is now against the Rabbitohs and we’re excited to play in front of our home fans.”
