Panthers on the Prowl will celebrate 10 years of 'Building Young Men' as the program continues to have a positive impact on young lives.
The Building Young Men program commenced in 2015 and is a group mentoring program for high school students in Year 9 and 10.
It provides explicit and interactive learning activities, where boys can engage in a positive, safe and caring environment with experienced role models.
We know that, today, our social conceptions of what it means to be a man often leads boys and men towards persistent negative outcomes.
From drug and alcohol use, sexual assault to mental health, violence against others or against themselves, statistics point to a critical problem, if not a crisis. We also know that boys aren’t broken, and we know that the future of masculinity is in their hands.
Becoming Young Men is about building youth who are empathetic, accountable and courageous; who are emotionally capable, committed to gender equality and role models for their peers; able to develop supportive friendships, handle crises with resilience and positively affect their communities.
The program runs one afternoon a week (2 hours) for 20 weeks plus a 24hr walk and an end of program camp.
The boys become more confident in speaking to others and connecting with their emotions. They are more aware of their families and others around them and begin to understand they are capable of much more than they had previously thought.
